  • Hi - if you end up painting any of my rhododendrons, I'd love to see them. I had fun going through your watercoloring lessons - emailed a link to them to an artist in my family. I was wondering if you've tried putting your camera on a tripod for the videos - it might make it easier for the camera to focus. If you're holding while you're painting, that's impressive (too many things for me to think about at once). If you would be able to talk us through what you were doing during the videos, it would really add a special touch. I was listening, but only heard the sound of your brush tapping. :) You are adding a delightful element to the Webshots site. Thanks! - John.

  • The yellow is getting way too bright in these pictures. Sorry! Again, I carefully wet only the shadow areas and touch in several colors right into the wet. If it's too strong, I touch my brush to my cloth and then I gently pat the colors out. Notice that I skip petals and I'm really careful not to paint another wet surface right next to one that is not dry yet. Edges of these shadows, top edges, phtalo blue, followed by cobalt blue, followed by blue-violet, and on the bottom petal, a little azo yellow dropped in gently. I think I will try to lift out that yellow blob on the petal on the right.

  • I thought I would do a little bit more of the background. I'm not at all sure this is going to be it. It could be too intense. I will have to be careful with that burnt umber, it gets kinda dirty and chalky when it dries. I might try a mixture for the dark parts.

  • The way I have done those branches is this. I wet them first, waited a little bit, then I painted the entire brance with a light mixture of pthalo blue. Then I painted the left edge with a mixture of indigo and burnt umber and tilted the board and let the colors run across the branches. I waited a little and darkened that left edge again with a more intense mix of indigo and pthalo blue, touched in some shadows.
