  • I went to Medellin for 11 days the first 4 of which I spent with John. I stayed in two other apartments as well. I was treated extremely well by everyone but of all people I met in Medellin John was the most knowledgeable hands down. He gave me the best crash course in Medellin I could have possibly hoped for and personally took me out on errands that I would not have been able to complete myself. John also took me to the orthodontist he used for his own teeth whitening and my quote to get my teeth completely whitened as well as having the gap between my two big front teeth filled in was only $475 USD. Since my stay was short I'll have to return to Medellin in a month to have the procedure completed but at this price its definitely worth it.

  • Great experience. The apartment is situated in a good, accessible location with some spectacular views of the city especially at night. My buddies and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and John is the consummate host.

  • This an unedited post copied and pasted from another webpage. Just completed an extended stay with John at the Laureles Penthouse Dec 27-Jan 11. This was my first time to stay in Laureles although I have visited the area before and am somewhat familiar with it. John is a gregarious guy and a gracious host. He speaks fluent Espanol and knows Medellin very well. He is always ready to lend a hand and there to offer advice or point you in the right direction. With just a little more work and attention to detail his place can be IMO one of "the places" to call home when visiting Medellin. With a little more work on the rooms regarding linen, televisions and more reliable housekeeping (which I know John is working on now) the Laureles Penthouse will be capable of competing with other better known establishments offering accomadations in Medellin. Personally I much prefer staying in Laureles than Poblado. IMHO Laureles is much better located for being closer to most of the things that I want to see. When John is able to remedy a few shortcomings in the Penthouse it will definitley be the place for me to stay during my future visits to Medellin. More later, Rainman3

  • Good Place to Stay This comment has been reposted by Gillettij from another webpage. It is un edited, and in it´s original format. I just got back from John's place. Let me begin by saying that I have stayed at the Mansion and VIP. The primary reason to stay at John's place is John. Unlike the other two place John is really there to assist his guest. I am not saying that the other place are good hotels, but John is really on call 24/7. Staying with John is like staying with a friend. When you stay with John the first thing he does is personally give you a tour of the city at no charge. He is also more than happy to call up women for you. The athompsher is very relaxed. Most of the day you sit arround and shoot the shiiiit with John and the other guest. The place isn't to big. There are five rooms, I think. All, but one of them have a private bathroom. The real difference between John and the other gringo places is that John is still new to the hotel business in Medellin. His hotel is still fun for him. His primary business is not running a hotel. He has other ventures, you may have actually seen his face on the internet and not realized it. John is a really cool guy. I would recommend staying with him. His place is a block away from resturants and a Pomona. It also very close to Aybobos. While I was staying there I ran into a medical problem and John was there to assist me. The following day he sent a translator with me to clear up my medical issue. My biggest complaint about John's place would be that 1) he isn't the best cook and 2) the maid seems very lazzy. I had to request that she come and clean my room twice. However, it really wasn't a problem considering that she is there for about 10 hours a day. John's place is really informal is more like staying with a friend.

  • Here it is only Febuary and we have seen so many new and repeat guests already this year. Marcos and Felipe were here from the great state of Alaska, Greg and Tim dropped in from Louisiana, Rob was in from Missouri, Antonio is here from Spain (we tried geting rid of him but he won´t go), also Rick was in from VA, and Luis is back from D.C., Brian was in from NYC, and recently we have had a flood of new reservations as a result of one of our newer friends helping out with some free publicity. Thanks Jimmy, you know who you are!!

  • Another great time in Laureles. I stayed at Johns place the entire time except for one day. I had rented a place in El Poblado and in less than a day I returned to Johns place. Laureles is the perfect area in Medellin to stay or I think even to live. The view from johns is great, as my desktop background is a photo taken from his apartment. The only thing bad about going there is the day that you leave because it is depressing knowledge that you have to come back to the states. I returned to U.S. on Dec 30 and I am planning my next trip for returning.

  • I was only going to stay in Medellin for 4 days, well it ended up being 8 days. I was suppose to fly to Bogota to visit family but never made it. I made new friends which made it feel like family. John you are a great host, you really make your guest feel welcomed. What a great little bar around the corner from the apartment "alicate" the women that walk in there Wow! Well, until next time As they say in Medellin "I gotta Go!!! (inside joke ask John)

  • It is already December in Medellin. We have seen a lot of guests come through the penthouse. Darryl from Philly had brought two of his life long buddies with him, and then they introduced JimmyDR and his brother Jay. Jimmy and Jay decided to stay for a few days as well. ¨Lawman´ came back for a couple of weeks, and GTEETH will be here again from Dec 17th until the 7th of January. Kevin was in from Panama. A new guest is on his way today from Colorado. The City of Medellin has lit up their Christmas display, and it is awesome. Soon, the holidays here will be in full swing. We are seeing lots of requests for reservations for Dec and January as well. We do have an opening still for December. We wish everyone a happy holiday season, and a prosperous year to come.

  • I am currently on my third visit in 2008 to Medellin Colombia. I have stayed at Medellin Rental Penthouse twice. I highly recommend staying here versus any other place. The price is reasonable and the location of Laureles is ideal. There are many great places within walking distances such as Crepes y Waffles and El Corral. The owner of the property turned me on to a domestic brewing place called Alicante! I cant say anything more. You all just need to come down and visit Medellin! To the owner, we had another wild Friday and Saturday evening.

  • All I can say is that this place is the best!! I traveled to Medellin for the "Fiesta De Las Flores", with my entire family, which consists of 3 sisters, 3 nephews, 3 neices, my brother in-law, my partner and son, and we couldn't have gotten luckier, than to have found John's Penthouse. He gave me a great deal for me to stay with my whole family their for two weeks, and all of us were quite pleased with "Beatriz", his maid, who made breakfast for us everyday, and washed all of our clothes on a daily basis. After having gone to John's, make no mistake that I will never stay at a hotel in Medellin again. I will most certainly stay at John's, and as far as doing business with him, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I put down a $1,000.00 security deposit, and I already had it in my bank account when I returned to the states. Thanks John for providing me and my family, a great place to stay at and wonderful memories of your beautiful penthouse!! Jaime P

  • I found this place through an add on Craigslist and let me tell you 100 times better than staying at a hotel...hands down. I flew to Medellin June 6th and John had a cab waiting at the airport with a sign with my name on it. Upon arrival to the penthouse I was surprised to find everything I was told and more.... John who I had only known over short telephone conversations greeted me and showed me around the place. I immediately felt at home. Much better than a hotel at half the price...I even had access to the living/dining areas as well as the kitchen. You can't beat it. John was very helpful in helping me get out and sightsee or whatever it was I felt like doing throughout my stay. My room was cleaned daily and breakfast was served every morning even if I got up a little late. If your planning to go to Medellin this is the place to stay. I am positive you wont regret it.

  • Visited John in June and had a great time, paid rent in advance with no problem. The apartment is beautiful, much better than any hotel and John is the perfect host always helpful with any request. (paisademedellin must be refering to someone else). I will be visiting again in September and would gladly refer anyone visiting Medellin to stay with John.

  • I was in Medellin July 24 thru 29 this year. I did prepay John for my stay at his penthouse in Medellin and there was no problems at all. I even had the master suite. John was very courteous and helpful, for anything that I could question about Medellin, which by the way is a wonderful place and I would consider living there in the near future. The penthouse is as nice as the photos if not better. This place makes you feel at home in Medellin and it is in a very nice neighborhood. Medellin and Johns penthouse, what else could you want for. I have no problem paying in advance to John, actually it makes it easier to budget if you have one. Hey John, I will be returning in October and December.

  • .....just finished renting an apartment from john and figured i would give you future renters some feedback. this is the second time i have rented from him and would return in a heartbeat without hesitation. found the hospitality and the surroundings to be above average, with the emphasis on hospitality. the fact that he spoke both languages was extremely helpful in making me feel at home, as my spanish is limited, and i also found that any of my dealings with him to be sincere and honest. to whomever wrote the negative comment all i can say is you must have the wrong website......chao.
