Barcelos - Apoio Square
antoniolouro > albums > NORTH of PORTUGAL
Album Info:
According to the main monographs about Barcelos, this was the first square of the «Borough». In the middle of it, there is a fountain, of Renaissance style, whose author is João Lopes. There is also the House of the Carmonas, the House of the Second-Lieutenant «Barcelense», and the House of the Constable (D. Nuno Álvares Pereira) that holds the coat of arms of the Pereira family. In 1427, the House of the Constable was donated by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira to his «beloved», Grácia Martins, the nurse of the 2nd Count of Bragança. In his whole, this square and the contiguous streets are the portrait of the urban character and the mediaeval way of life of the city of Barcelos.
