Longmen Grottoes was first carved in Northern Wei Dynasty in AD 493, when Emperor Xiaowen moved his capital from Pingcheng (now Datong City, Shanxi Province) to Luoyang. Craving lasted over 400 years. At present, there are 2,300 caves and niches, more than 2,800 pieces of inscriptions, about 80 Buddhist pagodas and approximately 110,000 Buddhist statues on both East Hill and West Hill.
