and we passed a gas station with gas at 4.29 a gallon. And then we passed the only humans we would see before dark: a pick-up truck with four men leaned up against it. Four rifles were likewise leaned against the truck, and four beers were in their hands. We drove on until the road turned to sand, and even then we continued driving on, but only at about 10 mph. So it was pitch black like only a desert can be when we pulled up to our campsite an hour or so later than we had planned. But there it was. We had avoided jackrabbits and long-horned cattle to get here and now here we were, and the stars were stirring, and the moon was a flashlight in our eyes all night, and we were all huddled in our tents, and we were all in love with so many things.
