Japanese costal batteries from WWII are still visible below the ridge. Shumshe was a hugh Japanese base, Kataoka Naval Base and Imaizaki Airfield was headquarters of Japan's 5th Fleet and Miyoshinio Airfield. The US bombed regularly from Alaska and on August 18, 1945 Soviet troops took the island after a brief tank battle. There are extensive ruins, but we did not land.
